10:30 – 10:50 am – On-Site Registration and warm-up.

11:00 am – Play for singles begins.

4:00 p.m. – Our goal is to finish up around 4:00 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. (Depending on the number of doubles matches).

IF WE HAVE 5 OR LESS PLAYERS IN A DIVISION THERE COULD BE A ROUND ROBIN FORMAT FOR THIS TOURNAMENT. IT DOES NOT MEAN EVERYONE PLAYS EACH OTHER.

  • Any player who withdraws must notify the tournament staff immediately. Players do not need to be members of USTA to play this tournament. Less than two entrants in a division will mean that event will be closed and the entrants placed in the next appropriate level up or down. The best advice we can give you is not to enter a tournament unless your calendar is open. Individuals may enter one singles and one doubles event.
  • While the scoring system is abbreviated this does not apply to the court or the balls used for this tournament. All ages and levels will play with the Regulation Yellow ball and on 78′ courts. THIS INCLUDES THE 8 AND UNDER’S BOYS AND GIRLS AND THE 10 AND UNDER BOYS AND GIRLS. PLEASE NOTE THIS WHEN SIGNING UP FOR THE TOURNAMENT.
  • Phone entries will cost an additional registration fee of $10 per player. Please enter online at the USTA link provided.
  • The MGP tournaments will all use abbreviated scoring each Saturday and are played over one day. For these events we use a variety of scoring formats to help with the developmental process of the players. Goal is to provide at least 3 matches – which could be simply three sets. GENERALLY OUR GOAL INCLUDES: DRAW SIZES OF 8 PLAYERS. The “abbreviated formats” means modified matches or sets are played in order to complete the tournament by early evening on Saturday. Example: If the entries are high the match would be 1 set to be played with No-Ad scoring to 6 games with a 12-Point Tiebreaker at 6 Games-All. Conversely, if entries are low a format with two sets, each starting at 2-all and a full third set is a possibility.
  • No refunds will be given once a tournament entry has been accepted and filed online. A credit toward the next tournament is offered if the player notifies us by Friday noon of the day before the tournament. If one round is completed in an event then the tournament will be counted as complete. No refunds will be given.
  • Lunch is included and will be served to all players during the tournament. All others pay a $10.00 lunch fee.
  • Entering a Grand Prix tournament and showing up to first match is worth 5 points. Each win is awarded 5 points. Each loss is awarded 2.5 points. Grand Prix points leaders in each division at the end of the tournament series will be announced after December 2024.
  • During these tournaments coaching is allowed. You may speak to the players most freely at the benches during the changeovers. Quiet and limited comments may be made during points. If this becomes abused in the judgement of the tournament staff then the coaching will be limited to only during the changeovers and from the bench.
No refunds will be given once a tournament entry has been accepted and filed online.

THE RALLY BALL CHALLENGE

The Tennis Dynamics Rally Cup Challenge is a special event held 4 times each year at the Laurel Park Tennis Center in Marietta, GA. Tennis Dynamics began the Rally Cup Challenge in 2015 as a fun new challenge for players of all levels and ages to compete for the longest continuous rally with a yellow ball on a 78′ court. We will be holding the The Rally Cup Challenge during the 2022 season. We will let you know when this event will be held on the Important Info section of the website where you register for the tournament.
  • Pairs of players begin a rally on a full or half court (begun at the blow of a whistle) with only one (yellow) regulation tennis ball from the baseline.
  • The players have one ball and one chance to keep the rally going.
  • Once either player misses in the rally they are done.
  • The last pair standing and rallying wins – but the credit for the rally count only goes to the one player who makes the last ball in the court.
  • A player may save an out ball by rallying the ball back out of the air but the rally is over if the ball lands outside of the lines or if the ball bounces twice.
  • The rally is over if the players stop the rally for any reason.
  • The rally is over if the ball lands in the net.
  • Players must keep the ball in a rally mode such as to be from baseline to baseline.
  • If a rally begins to take place predominantly inside the service box then players will be disqualified.
  • A good rule of thumb is the rally must happen where the ball is landing beyond the service box more than 60-70% of the time.

This contest takes place at 10:30 a.m. before the Marietta Grand Prix begins. YOU MUST BE REGISTERED AT THE DESK BEFORE 10:20 AM. The winner of the contest gets the recognition and his/her name engraved permanently on the enormous silver trophy kept at the Laurel Park Tennis Center. All players need to be present at 10:20 a.m. in order to review the rules for the contest. If the players are entered into the Marietta Grand Prix then they are then they are able to compete at no charge. If rally players are not entered in the MGP then the fee is $5.00.

The first Rally Cup Challenge contest was held in 2015 and was won by a fantastic 6 year-old girl named Chloe Zigliara. Chloe managed to rally just under a 400-ball-rally with her partner. To win the Rally Cup Challenge it takes skill and discipline. Chloe defeated several older ranked players to win the first challenge. 10 kids and adults joined in the contest which lasted over 30 minutes. Each time we hold the Rally Ball Challenge we produce another fantastic rally.

So come join us to participate or come join us to watch the contest!

We look forward to to this super event held to benefit the Marietta Tennis Association. Dr Jorge Valverde is a great speaker and sports psychologist and will be coming to Marietta, GA on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022 until Wednesday May 11th, 2022. This great session lead by Dr. Valverde is presented by the Marietta Tennis Association, Laurel Park Tennis Center, and Tennis Dynamics. We hope everyone who has an interest in improving their ability on court handling pressure will attend. The session is open to players and their parents and coaches. Please RSVP by calling and leaving a message as to who will be attending what session and how many in your party. Call us (770)919-8602.

Dr. Valverde received his Doctoral degree in Psychology from the University of Kansas where he also coached tennis. Over the last 30 plus years he has served as a Sports Psychologist for many top juniors and professional players.

Dr. Valverde’s system teaches you how to stay calm, focused and confident when competing, regardless of the challenges you may face, such as: closing matches, playing poorly, feeling nervous, making too many unforced errors, not being able to figure out the right strategy to win matches, etc. In addition, by using his system you will learn how to be prepared mentally before playing a match, as well as what to do after playing your matches. From the parents and coaches’ perspective, it is very painful to watch a loved one or a person that they coach perform below their capabilities. The window of opportunity in tennis is a small one; thus, if tennis players (regardless of their talent) don’t learn to deal with the pressure — to perform at their best when facing difficult situations — their chances of maximizing their potential is very limited.

If you would like to schedule a “free” private consultation on Tuesday or Wednesday Dr. Valverde will be happy to meet at the Laurel Park Tennis Center on either of those days.

The Open division is open to the top 6-8 players who register. We will consider “all factors” in determining the qualifying entrants and seedings. If there is a large number of entrants we will host a Qualifying Tournament on the Wednesday evening before and thru Friday. We will select 6 entrants into the main draw and 2 entrants will have to qualify for the event. The qualifying matches may be longer scoring formats than the main draw format on Saturday due to less time constraints. Prize money is awarded based on the number of entrants. Our intent is to award to the Champion, Finalist and perhaps semi-finalists in the singles. For the Doubles events the Champions of both the Gentleman’s and Ladies Doubles are awarded prize money. More info on the prize money levels is to follow in the coming days.

We most likely will not be providing officials for these events. Players are expected to adhere to “The Code”.

There are no back draws for the Open Events. It is a “One and Done!” event for both the qualifier and the main draw events.

Ad Scoring will be used in all events to assist in allowing for “benefit of doubt”.

Alternative formats will be used for both the singles and doubles on Saturday. One example of an alternative format might be playing the TB first and then the subsequent sets. We call that format “The Icebreaker” format. Scoring might even include starting a set at 2-2 in order to complete the events before the end of the day. The doubles events could be shortened even more as they will occur after the singles is completed. One possible format for the doubles will be one set to six starting at 2-All in games.

Here is the link for the MGP #1 Open $$ Divisions.

2020 Comeback Team Challenge – Lineups

Sponsorship

We are happy to announce for the 2020 Comeback Challenge our friends at CourtMakers are one of the sponsors for the event. CourtMakers is one of the oldest court resurfacing businesses in the Southeast. They do some of the best work on courts all over the Atlanta area. In addition to being one of the best in the business they are always willing to step up and help the tennis community. Please check them out!

If you are interested in helping sponsor this event please give us a call at 678-687-5662.

It is not complicated! Play Ball!

  • Each team will have a coach and they will submit their lineup 10 minutes before their match to the desk.
  • The coaches will have leeway in determining their lineup.
  • Each child will be offered the opportunity to play doubles at least twice over the weekend by the coaches.
  • Coaches from both teams may also consult one another before the match is played if they choose to do so. It is not a requirement.
  • Once the lineups are turned in to the desk the line-up is final unless appealed by the coach to Games Committee. Once play begins there is no further change.
  • We chose this small match format to use because of the “social distancing” requirements being adhered to throughout our society to work our way out of the pandemic. There will be two singles matches and a one doubles match being played. This leans heavily toward singles play. But it can also lead to varied results. Play the match one day and you might have completely different results on the next day.
  • There are a variety of things which will determine coaches’ line-ups: from parents not wanting their children on a doubles court, from a child not wanting to play singles or doubles, to partnerships and friendships, to sibling rivalries, to injuries, to hurt feelings and on and on. We also chose to give the coaches leeway in dealing with their line-ups because of these various problems which may arise.
  • A coach can choose to take lots of feedback or very little from relatives and coaches.
  • The Boys Teams have five players on each team. They have a schedule which must be followed regarding sitting a player every round and that is located on the post written to define the schedule here.
  • Some team competitions give no freedom and the lineup is set by the organizing entity (ex., USTA Zonals). We feel we need to allow more freedom for this event. We are not desirous of establishing strict lineup guidelines.
  • Obviously the criteria of the players’ standing and UTR will be considered.
  • The doubles match will end up being the “wildcard” variable that can influence results. Players can be offered 2 opportunities to play doubles. But no child is required to play doubles. If this seems counter intuitive please understand there are some parents concerned with the prospect of playing doubles.
  • If somebody wants to cheat they will figure out a way to do so.
  • If you end up playing somebody better than you — this too, is probably going to happen along the way over the weekend. But please remember there is “no bad win in tennis” and we are doing this to get match play opportunities.
  • We will have a “Games Committee” and any appeal can be made to the committee prior to the match beginning. The committee’s ruling will stand and the lineup will need to be adjusted accordingly. No appeals after the match has been played will be reviewed.
  • In the end here is the main directive we are giving to the coaches regarding lineups:

Your lineup has to be in true order of ability. So a #1 cannot play below a #3 in singles. We are going to allow the most variance with the doubles. You can take your #1 and play them with the #5 in doubles and make a lineup.

Do the right thing like Coach Holtz says!
